Clearing the Air: Examining Public Perception of Cannabis Vaping

May 13, 2025

Cannabis vaping has emerged as one of the fastest-growing segments in the legal cannabis industry. While the practice has attracted a broad base of consumers—from patients seeking medicinal relief to trend-driven recreational users—it also raises questions about public perceptions, stigma, and industry strategies for reputation management.

Overall, the public views cannabis vaping through a lens shaped by both innovation and precaution. On one hand, many users and advocates promote vaping as a cleaner, more efficient alternative to traditional smoking. Studies indicate cannabis vaporizers produce far fewer harmful combustion byproducts—some reporting only three extra compounds compared to more than 100 in smoked forms. Supporters widely believe vaping can transfer more cannabinoids with less tar, carbon monoxide, and carcinogens—a narrative often echoed in marketing.

Yet despite these benefits, vaping still carries its share of negative stigma. Public health scares, notably the 2019–2020 EVALI lung-illness outbreak—linked to black-market THC cartridges contaminated with vitamin E acetate—left deep impressions. The illness affected nearly 2,800 people and caused dozens of deaths. Coverage by major news outlets framed vaping as potentially deadly—an image that lingered even as licensed markets emphasized regulation and product safety.

Compounding the issue are perceptions of immaturity, shaped by broader cannabis culture. The “stoner” stereotype—anchored in ideas of laziness or youth—persists, despite evidence that today’s cannabis users are diverse and often responsible consumers. The distinction between medicinal users, wellness-focused adults, and younger recreational participants remains blurred, fueling confusion and continued social judgment.

Academics find stigma remains a formidable barrier. A 2023 study noted that many patients—even in jurisdictions where cannabis is legal—refrain from disclosing use to healthcare professionals, fearing judgment. Another Canadian qualitative study revealed that even therapeutic users “keep CTP under cover” to avoid misunderstanding or negative reactions.

So, how can the cannabis industry counteract these negative associations?

  1. Emphasize transparent quality control. Licensed brands can highlight independent testing, ingredient disclosure, and batch traceability. By reassuring consumers about regulated safety—unlike the EVALI-linked illicit market—they can rebuild trust.
  2. Reposition messaging around wellness. Shifting branding from “stoner culture” to health-driven narratives—like pain relief, stress reduction, or sleep aid—can broaden appeal. Mainstream consumer engagement often increases when the presentation is mature and functional.
  3. Promote honest education on risks. The industry should support balanced information: vaping is cleaner than smoking, yet not risk-free. Citing credible data—both pros and cons—can reduce misinformation and increase informed consumption.
  4. Destigmatize through storytelling. Featuring real people—medical patients, working professionals, active seniors—using cannabis responsibly can challenge stereotypes. Personal narratives recounting positive cannabis experiences can shift public sentiment.
  5. Engage social media responsibly. Platforms are saturated with glamorized or youth-driven vape content. Industry voices should elevate mature, safety-focused content, advocating for age-gating and clear labeling.

In summary, cannabis vaping exists at a crossroads: prided for innovation, yet shadowed by health scares and cultural bias. A strategic industry pivot—built on transparency, education, wellness positioning, and sophisticated branding—can help reshape public perception. When vaping is framed as a carefully controlled, adult-oriented lifestyle choice, the industry has the opportunity to transcend lingering stigma and earn lasting social acceptance.
